Sister Mary Ignatius Davies (1921-2003)

SM - Sister Mary Ignatius Davies or common known as Sister Ignatius has a vital role in the development of ska today, a mentor and spiritual guide of the Alpha Boy's School, Kingston. So, who's she? Well, here's a little bit about Sister Ignatius.

Sister Ignatius was born in Innswood, St. Catherine on November 18, 1921. Sister Ignatius at baptism in a Roman Catholic church in Spanish Town and go to school for the first time in the same city, before eventually moving to Kingston and attend school in Mico Elementary School, then at Alpha Academy. She joined the Sisters Of Mercy on February 1, 1939, and lived in Kingston until she passed away.
Alpha Boy's School was founded in the 1980s in Central Kingston, as well as home school for naughty children. The school also has a music education program, which has a crucial role in raising ska in Jamaica. The most famous ska bands at the time was The Skatalites, which four of the pioneer-Tommy McCook, Johnny "Dizzy" Moore and Lester Sterling, and Don Drummond, is a graduate of the Alpha Boy's School. "The Old Boys" Sister Ignatius called for the first generation students. The graduates of the Alpha Boy's School, through their works, giving many contributions in the development of rocksteady and ska till reagge.

Sister Ignatius passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2003 at the University Hospital of the West Indies, caused by heart attacks.
